Top 5 Things to Do as a Liverpool Student
We get it. You’ve just arrived to start your student adventure in Liverpool. You’ve heard all the great stories about the Beatles, the docks, the football rivalry, but you still don’t know where to start.
Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here are the top 5 things to do while you’re studying in Liverpool.
1. The Cavern Club: Where the Beatles’ Story Started
Possibly Liverpool’s – and Britain’s – most renowned cultural export, the Beatles started life in the city’s inconspicuous Cavern Club which in recent years has become a shrine to Paul, John, Ringo and George.
The Cavern Club is no museum, though. It stills operates as a nightclub and offers live entertainment throughout the week – the perfect spot to grab a drink and truly immerse yourself in Liverpool’s nightlife!
This Liverpool landmark is around 20 minutes away from One Islington Plaza by taxi or public transport – ideal after a heavy night out…
2. The Baltic Triangle
Once an industrial area, the Baltic Triangle is now a thriving hub of street food stalls, bars and entertainment venues. Looking for a stand-up comedy night? Try out District. A grimy night of house and techno more your style? Check out 24 Kitchen Street. And if those don’t take your fancy, you can always treat yourself to some retail therapy at Red Brick Market or show off your putting skills at Ghetto Golf.
25 minutes away from our Plato House and Pembroke Studios accommodation, you won’t have to travel far to get your social fix.
3. A Day Trip to Anfield
For the Liverpool fans amongst you, a trip to Anfield is a must. What’s more, students can take advantage of discounted tours of the ground. The perfect way to get to know your new home team!
A pro tip for all Liverpool fans out there: try to book tickets for midweek games as they tend to be cheaper than weekend matches.
4. Tate Liverpool
An offshoot of the Tate Gallery in London, Tate Liverpool is a hub art and culture in the city. Displaying a range of art from across the world, you can find Tate Liverpool in its temporary home of RIBA North in Mann Island, with its Royal Albert Dock gallery due to reopen in 2027.
5. Williamson’s Tunnels
You’ll be getting used to seeing Liverpool above ground over the course of your studies – but what about taking a look at the city from beneath the ground?
One for the history buffs, Williamson’s Tunnels are truly a hidden gem, built beneath Edge Hill by local tobacco merchant Joseph Williamson in the early 19th century. To this day the purpose of the tunnels remains uncertain, with commercial mining and the eccentricity of Williamson’s character being reasons why he might have decided to excavate beneath Liverpool.
Make the Most of Your Liverpool Student Experience
There is plenty more to Liverpool than these 5 suggestions. From Sefton Park to New Brighton Beach, you won’t have trouble finding a spot that’s just you.
You’ve got the itinerary, you’re enrolled in your course – but do you have a place to stay? Book your room at One Islington Plaza, Plato House, Pembroke Studios or Phoenix Place and start your new student life in Liverpool the right way.
