Welcome to Sheffield!

Once famed for its steel production back in the 19th century, Sheffield has transformed itself from being one of the industrial powerhouses of the UK, to a vibrant, modern city, known for having a diverse culture, generous green spaces and buzzing student nightlife.

Now the UK’s fifth largest city, Sheffield is home to over 60,000 students. Boasting not just one, but two world-class universities, the city has evolved to provide everything its student population could ever wish for. What’s more, it’s also one of England’s most affordable university cities according to the NatWest Student Living Index 2020.

Large, but surprisingly easy to navigate, there’s something to ensure students are kept well entertained all year long. There’s culture aplenty with an array of independent eateries, microbreweries, live music venues, theatres, cinemas, and art galleries, and more, all situated against the stunning backdrop of the Peak District.

With so many things to see and do and some of the best educational facilities in the country, Sheffield makes a great choice of destination to study. Now, to choose where to live when you get here.

Sheffield has previously been named ‘the UK’s Friendliest city, and it’s not hard to see why. Whilst it’s one of the UK’s largest cities, it also boasts a chilled-out ‘small-town’ vibe, making it a fantastic place to live. This is further enhanced by how much green space there is within the city. Serene and beautiful, there aren’t many better ways to pass the time between lectures than taking a wander through Sheffield park. Chill out with a beer in the summer, or with the snow in the winter – there’s few better spaces in the country (although we may be slightly biased).

If you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll find it aplenty in Sheffield. Division Street offers some upmarket bars for a civilised evening, but West Street is the popular choice for a full-blown night out. Stop in at the infamous West Street Live, for the ultimate place to drink on a student budget, or head around the corner to Carver Street, where you’ll find some of the most lively bars and pubs in the city.

If that student loan is burning a hole in your pocket, Sheffield is packed with shopping opportunities. Find big brands and designer wares at Meadowhall – the largest shopping centre in Yorkshire! Or scout out vintage treasures in Sheffield’s ever expanding selection of unique & retro stores.

If live music is more your thing, there’s a fantastic programme of events, festivals and gigs year-round in Sheffield. One of the most famous is Tramlines. In summer 2019, acts included Rag ’n’ Bone Man, Lewis Capaldi and Annie Mac.

If you love the great outdoors, The nearby Peak District with walking paths, hills, cliffs and reservoirs are easily accessible from the City by bus and train.
