Set in the glorious grounds of cobbled streets and a sea of greenery, the castle boasts an inviting feel to take a step back in time. Charles Dickens had a real strong connection with Rochester, living in a neighbouring village, Dickens would visit Rochester often. The town features heavily in his work and has served as inspiration for his novels. One extremely notable example is Restoration House. It is believed to be his influence for Miss Havisham’s Satis House in Great Expectations.
Rochester hosts a Dickens Festival twice a year, bringing the Victorian history to life. Their Dickensian Christmas Festival is hugely popular and visited by many across the country. Parades and performances bring the town to life and you can really immerse yourself in a Victorian world!
